Beijing to issue 5 million smart cards

Beijing will issue five million smart cards in 2015, including health cards and those for the elderly, the Beijing Morning News reported.

Beijing has so far issued more than 15 million social security cards and over 70 million municipal transportation cards; meanwhile, the number of patient ID cards issued by hospitals has exceeded 100 million.

Zhang Boxu, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, said: “We set up the standard of the multi-purpose card ‘Beijing Tong’, and had built a unified platform for the whole city by last year. In the future, citizens will only need to remember their card’s 12-digit number to handle all their business.”

This year, the commission will expand usage by issuing more than five million health cards and cards for the elderly based on the “Beijing Tong” standard.
