Sudan May Have 4G Service Within Months

Sudan’s mobile networks will launch 4G services within the next three months, the country’s Minister of Science and Telecommunications Tahani Abdullah has announced.

However, apart from that declaration, she offered no details to theSudan Tribune of which networks would launch the service, or what the coverage would be like.

“The entire Sudan will be covered by the Internet and computer services through e-government and other services. The telecommunications sector will contribute to the national income by 10%,” Abdullah said.

Zain Telecom’s managing director El-Fatih Erwa revealed that Zain wanted to roll out 4G service on a trial basis but that the government prevented them from doing so.

The Minister also called for customers to make “responsible and positive use” of mobile apps, implying that the government may want to clamp down on apps which encourage sharing of information critical of the autocratic regime.
